Thomas Putman Obituary

Thomas Ward Putman, 81, of Weatherford passed away peacefully with his family by his side on January 17, 2024.

He was born on November 20, 1942 to James E. and Nella V. Putman in Johnson City, New York. He was raised in New York with his siblings James, Carol and Gerald. Tom graduated Johnson City High School and later trained as a Journeyman Tool and Die maker. He worked for General Electric Power Generation for 38 years until retirement. After retirement he was a consultant for General Electric Power Generation for many years.

In 2005 he moved to Texas to be close to his grandchildren.

His hobbies included Barbershop Chorus and Quartet singing.  He loved camping with his family and friends and enjoyed playing softball and basketball with the Bethany United Methodist Church, Summerville, South Carolina league.

Tom volunteered at Bethany United Methodist Church as a Boy Scouts liaison, was a Volunteer Firefighter for over 30 years in 3 Fire departments with recognition of Fireman of the year award, Life Saving award, rank of Lieutenant with Summerville, South Carolina Fire Department and a First Responder in Summerville.

Tom enjoyed immensely his opportunity to travel for General Electric internationally for many years where he met many wonderful people. He really enjoyed taking a car ride on the weekends to just drive and look around or check places out for the day.

Thomas sang in four Church Choirs over his lifetime. Was a member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Men's group.  He held many Church Council Positions throughout his lifetime. Most recently a member of Bethel United Methodist Church Weatherford, Texas where he enjoyed leading the music for church service.

Tom loved his family, his church family and all he met along his many travels and encounters. He could see someone in an airport and greet them and never forget their name. He was very outgoing and was always one of the first people to show up to help.

He is preceded in death by his father, James E. Putman; mother, Nella V. Putman; son, Kevin W. Putman.

Those left to cherish his memory include spouse Joan S. Putman of Hudson Oaks, Texas; daughters, Susan Putman Johnson of Fort Worth, Texas, Melany Putman of Ballston Lake, New York; grandchildren, Miller Johnson and Katherine Johnson of Fort Worth, Texas; siblings James Putman (the late, Sharon) of Johnson City , New York, Carol Crimmins (Daniel) of Binghampton, New York, Gerald Putman (Kristine) of Johnson City, New York; several nieces, nephews, cousins as well as numerous lifelong special friends and his faithful cat, Gabby Moo.

Memorial Service:  Friday, February 9, 2024 2:00pm at Bethel United Methodist Church Weatherford, Texas

Burial to be determine at a later date in New York State.

Donation’s can be made in Tom Putman's name to Bethel United Methodist Church Weatherford, Texas or to Alzheimer's Association which are both especially important to Tom and Joan.
