Richard Motycka Obituary

Richard Alan “Rick” Motycka was born on March 21st, 1955, in Van Wert, Ohio, to Frank George Motycka and to Mary Frances Sochor, and passed away on October 24th, 2023, in Hudson Oaks, Texas, at the age of 68 years old.

Rick was the second of 4 sons born to Frank and Mary Frances Motycka, of Van Wert, Ohio. After spending time in the mountains of Colorado, he moved to Midland, Texas, in the late 1980's. His career in commercial real estate spanned for four decades across Texas.

Rick had a passion for the outdoors and nature. He kept verdant gardens of fruits, vegetables, and a large tropical plant collection.  He was also a beekeeper in the last decade of his life. Some of you have surely been gifted his Bee Kind Honey from his hives in Hudson Oaks.

Rick was a master storyteller. He could spin a yarn so long he would inevitably end with "to make a long story bearable." It's safe to say Rick had the patience of a saint when he became a father to 5 children. His ultimate superpower was the love he had for Christy and his son, daughters, and many grandchildren who referred to him affectionately as Popi.

Rick is preceded in death by his mother and father.

Rick is survived by his wife of 25 years, Christy Motycka of Hudson Oaks, Texas. He is also survived by Micky Ray and wife Megan of Austin, Texas; Jessie Ray of Austin, Texas; Sarah Smith and husband Phillip of Aledo, Texas; Rachel Campbell and husband Holten of Aledo, Texas; Chandler Schoonover and husband Toby of Weatherford, Texas; and eleven grandchildren who brought him the greatest joy. He is also survived by his brothers Frank, Tom, and Mike Motycka and several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held on December 2nd, 2023, at the Ft. Worth Botanic Garden located at: 3220 Botanic Garden Blvd, Ft. Worth, Texas. The celebration will take place at 2PM.  Celebratory attire is encouraged.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to the National Parks Foundation or to Canine Companions.
