Janet Catherine Daugherty, 89, of Plano, Texas passed away peacefully with loving family by her side on March 30, 2022. She was born on December 26, 1932, to Elizabeth and Hugh James in Birkenhead, England.
Throughout her life, Janet also known as “Nana” loved to garden, spend time in nature, bird watching, reading mysteries, watching English detective shows on the BBC with a cup of tea, spending time with her dogs, visiting with friends around the world, shopping especially for shoes and bags, and loved to oil paint. She also had a soft spot for all animals, particularly those without homes. She was an active animal caregiver well into her 80’s passing on the love of animals to her children and grandchildren. Nana studied English Literature and received her bachelor’s degree with honors. Nana taught us to love, to see beauty from the inside out, to take our place in the world proudly, and bloom there. She lived an inspiring life and leaves her family unforgettable memories and incredible stories of growing up in England during WWII. She was a true Brit and loved sharing English traditions with her children and grandchildren. We grew up having tea parties, singing English songs, watching English shows, eating English foods, and incorporating English traditions into our Holidays. She was truly a treasure to our family.
Nana was a loving and devoted wife and Mother. She and her late husband, Coy Daugherty, were married 58 years and shared many laughs together. They were devoted to each other in marriage and you could always find them holding hands. They loved to travel and went on many adventures in England, Scotland, Ireland and Italy. They lived in California, Hawaii, Nebraska and Colorado and eventually retiring in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. They also spent a great deal of time in Texas visiting with their granddaughters. The beach was Nana’s favorite place and she loved to collect seashells while walking in the sand. Some of her fondest memories included stories of their time spent in Hawaii.
Her family has and will continue to always feel her unconditional love. Her quick wit, English charm, grace, loyalty, and generous heart leaves a lasting impression of a life well lived. She will always be our English Rose.
Nana is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Coy Daugherty, and her brother’s John James and Brian James.
She is survived by her children Mark Daugherty (Rhonda Sands), Lisa (Alex) Antonio; grand children Megan (Chris) Van Hoy, Lauren (William) Bissett, Dustin (Stacey) Antonio, Jordan Williams; great grandchildren, Layla Rose Bissett, Aspen Elizabeth Bissett, Jonathan Brock Van Hoy, Witten Macabe Van Hoy and Emerson Lee Van Hoy. Sister-in-law and dear friend, Marg James and loving family in England, Angela Bradshaw & family in San Francisco and Kim and Jonathan Swaffield & family in New Jersey, Joe Lewis & family in New Zealand and many devoted and caring friends that she cherished for many years and who she dearly loved.
