Jim was born in San Pedro, California and graduated from San Pedro High School. He studied at LA Harbor College and graduated from LA Trade Tech in Graphic Arts. He worked in Graphic Arts for several years and then he built a sailboat and at the age of 35 sailed off on the adventure of a lifetime. He settled in LaPaz BCS, Mexico, where he started four businesses there. When he returned, it was another adventure and he met it with enthusiasm.
James was a man of varied interests. He loved sailing and woodworking. He had a lifelong love of jazz and learned how to play several woodwind instruments. He loved the challenge of archery. He loved meeting people from different cultures and lifestyles. A friend of his said it well: “Jim represented the America I fell in love with; handsome, funny, intellectual, outspoken, didn’t fear disagreeing with you but always with respect and no prejudice.”
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Marie Jose Hughes and Don Hughes.
He is survived by his loving wife, Connie McGowen-Hughes; sisters, Susan Franks-Wilson and husband Ted Wilson, Jeannette Cake and husband Dan Cake; brother, Gary Hughes and wife Mercy Medina-Hughes. He was also survived by the children and grandchildren he gathered and loved by marriage.
He was my North, my South, my East and West My working week and my Sunday rest My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song I thought love would last forever…I was wrong Now cracks a noble heart. Good night sweet prince, And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest. - Connie McGowan-Hughes
