Ignacio Alfonso “Nacho” Luna was born on August 2nd, 1937, in Guadalajara, Mexico, to Miguel Luna and to Maria Del Pilar Plasencia, and passed away on August 14th, 2023, in Cleburne, Texas, at the age of 86 years old.
Nacho was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, in 1937. He was the doting son to Maria del Pilar Plascencia and to Miguel Luna. As the oldest child, he took it upon himself to leave school and not pursue his musical career in order to help his family financially. He had a beautiful singing voice and had been offered a scholarship to Julliard, but he never regretted his choice. Over the years he became a successful salesman and was frequently traveling around the country. On one of his trips, he was getting back to the hotel, when he spotted the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. In a story frequently retold to his children and anyone else who would listen, he recounted how he quickly went up to his room to shower so he could look his best as he introduced himself to her. That woman, Rosalina Martinez, became the love of his life and his wife in 1965. They eventually moved to the United States and had five children. Nacho and Rosy were married 58 years, 6 months, 23 days, at the time of his passing. In his final time on earth, he would frequently re-tell the story of how he met Rosalina providing details that were so precious in his mind, like the color of her dress.
Nacho was a lifelong Catholic, and he spent many years in his youth as an altar boy and when his physical illness no longer allowed him to go to church, he made a point of faithfully watching Mass every Sunday on TV. In his prime, he was a regular member of the church choir. As an adult, Nacho taught himself how to play a piano and he would spend hours playing songs he knew. Nacho had such a great musical ear that he never forgot a song. When he was learning English as an adult, he would ask his classmates to sing their native songs and he would learn those as well. There were times during his hospital stays through the years that he would meet nurses from other countries and sometimes he would sing the songs he had learned from his classmates. More than once he brought tears to a nurse's eyes when they heard a song from their childhood in their native language.
Nacho deeply loved his family and was very proud of all his children. None inherited his musical abilities and although he would have enjoyed having his own version of the Von Trapp family, there were no conditions on his love.
Nacho is survived by his beautiful and beloved wife, Rosy, and his five children and their families.
While we will miss him, Nacho now gets to use his beautiful voice signing with the angels.
