Howard Green Obituary

Howard R. Green passed away on February 26, 2024 after a brief and courageous battle with cancer.

Howard was born in Austin, Texas on December 24, 1947 to Donald and Florence Green. He grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa where he lived outdoors, enjoying fishing and camping with his brothers. He fondly remembered his family’s short time living on a farm before city life and was proud of his first job as a paper boy. Howard graduated from George Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, where he participated in Youth for Christ.

Howard met the love of his life, Virigina (Ginger) Berry, at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota. They were married in the late ‘60s, and he completed his degree in Sociology in 1970. In Minnesota, he loved to canoe and started his career in food service.

After graduation, they moved to Kansas to each complete Master’s degrees at the University of Kansas in Lawerence. Their first baby boy was born premature and passed, but they relied on the Lord for His eventual blessing of more children.

By the late ‘70s, Howard and Ginger were living and working in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and their children Jeffrey and Robyn were born. More than 40 years ago, the family moved to DFW and Allison was born as Howard continued working in food service and accounting. He ended his career as a senior academic advisor at North Lake College. He loved his interactions with students and colleagues that were also friends.

Howard enjoyed time at the beach, especially flying kites. He had a sailboat before converting to the more family-friendly canoe and pop-up camper. Howard was an excellent, adventurous, and particular cook, but his favorite food was frozen yogurt. He said the best is from Braum’s. Beyond camping, he enjoyed traveling globally with is family, with Norway and Papua New Guinea among recent travels.

As an adolescent Howard believed in Christ as his Savior, having understood and accepted the saving and undeserving grace of Jesus through his death and resurrection. He was involved with church wherever he lived. His family grieves with hope, knowing they will see him again in Heaven.

Howard is survived by his wife of 55 years, Virginia, Jeffrey (Kara) Green, Robyn Green, and Allison (Adrian) Martinez. His granddaughter Olivia was born just after his diagnosis and has been the light of his life for the last four months. He loved her dearly. He is also survived by his Aunt Anna Palmer, three brothers: Denis (Pam) Green, Robert (Carol) Green, and David (Betty Lou) Green, and sister-in-law Janice Berry. He has many beloved nieces, nephews, and their families. He was preceded in death by his infant son.

A memorial service is scheduled for 12 noon on Saturday, March 2 at Mid-Cities Bible Church in Bedford. Visitation with the family will be from 10:30 to 12.

Donations in his honor can be made to two causes that were near to his heart since they were near to his daughters’ hearts: Mercy Ships or Ethnos360 (PNG field).
